In this September 9th webinar, Tom welcomes Dr. Jordan Grant for a focused conversation on vitamin D, vitamins, hormones, omega-3s, genes, and other claimed substances in biology.
Tom opens by clarifying the purpose of the discussion: this is not about whether cod liver oil, butter, or Weston A. Price-style foods are beneficial, and it is not about attacking anyone’s intentions. The specific question is whether the studies presented as proof actually demonstrate the existence of substances like vitamin D in foods or living beings.
He explains that many people have sent him a Weston Price Journal article claiming to show the type and amount of vitamin D in various foods, and he invites Jordan to walk through the evidence and the thinking process behind these claims.
Highlights from this session include:
-Tom and Jordan discuss the difference between what researchers actually do in a lab versus the stories later told about what those results mean.
-Jordan introduces the distinction between scientific realism and an operationalist/instrumentalist way of thinking, emphasizing the importance of sticking to what can actually be observed.
-They look at the “recipe” often used in claims about vitamins, hormones, nucleotides, amino acids, and other invisible entities: starting with tissue or food, applying chemical steps, creating a product, and then claiming the product was “isolated” from the original material.
-Tom and Jordan examine papers describing vitamin D preparation and isolation, including the use of solvents, acids, chloroform, methanol, irradiation, and crystallization.
-Jordan explains why he sees many of these claims as question-begging: researchers often assume the very entity they are supposed to prove.
-They discuss fluorescence, spectroscopy, chromatography, and similar methods, questioning whether these tests actually prove the presence of a specific substance or simply record a lab behavior.
-Jordan emphasizes that a peak, color change, crystal, or lab readout may be real as an observed effect, but that does not automatically prove the identity, origin, or biological role being claimed.
-Tom and Jordan connect this same thinking to blood tests, hormone tests, vitamin D tests, B12 tests, cholesterol, genes, viruses, and PCR testing.
-They discuss how this way of thinking can make people feel powerless by shifting attention away from lived experience and toward abstract, invisible mechanisms.
-Tom closes by asking where people can hear more from Jordan, followed by a lighter final question about whether Jordan can do a pull-up.
Throughout the webinar, Tom and Jordan emphasize returning to direct observation, questioning assumptions, and separating real-world effects from the stories built around them.
