Most people are physically present in their lives but not actually there. They're somewhere in the past, relitigating something that already happened, or somewhere in the future, anxious about something that might. And the present moment — which is the only moment anything actually happens in — passes by while they're somewhere else.
Brett McKay writes that being fully present requires self-control, bravery, and a willingness to be open to both unmitigated pain and undiluted joy. The easier path, he says, is to pursue every shiny thing that crosses your way, or to numb yourself and sleepwalk through life. And he ends with a question worth sitting with: isn't it about time you started showing up for your own life?
What keeps most people from doing that is one of two things — or both. They're still emotionally living in something that happened before, and that past experience has become the lens through which they interpret everything happening right now. A woman who carries unresolved hurt from the past starts filtering her husband's words and actions through that hurt, creating distance neither of them can quite explain. Her emotional reality — rooted in something that happened years ago — becomes the framework for what's actually in front of her. And until that gets addressed honestly, the present moment is never quite accessible.

Discussion Questions
1. On a normal day, how present are you actually — in your work, your relationships, your own life? What pulls you out of the present most often?
2. Is there an old emotional wound that's become a lens you're using to interpret what's happening right now? What would it look like to identify that and set it down?
3. What would "showing up fully" for your own life look like this week — not eventually, but specifically, in the relationships and moments right in front of you?
