Your brain can promise a reward and still leave you feeling underwhelmed. That gap is where so many of our “I know better, but I did it anyway” habits live, from evening scrolling and snacking to wine, shopping, and skipping movement when stress is high. I unpack a simple, practical way to interrupt that loop by working with your nervous system rather than fighting it.
The core tool is one fast question you can ask in the moment: am I feeding joy or am I feeding overwhelm? Because the same action can come from a regulated parasympathetic state or from a fight-or-flight push for a quick hit, and the body experience is totally different. When it is joy, there is presence, connection and real pleasure. When it is overwhelm, the behaviour often fails to land and you are left chasing the feeling you expected.
We also dig into the neuroscience of reward, including the difference between wanting and liking, and why dopamine is not simply the “pleasure chemical”. That framework makes cravings feel less like a character flaw and more like useful data. From there, I share realistic alternatives for creating a state shift that supports long-term health goals, including sensory swaps, connection, and even my favourite not-very-rock-and-roll reset: ten minutes of a jigsaw.
If this helps you see your patterns with more kindness and clarity, subscribe, share the episode with someone you care about, and leave a review so more people can find their way back to their body.
