Anxiety can be loud, but it can also be invisible. Sometimes it looks like a person who’s “fine,” holds a job, shows up for everyone else, and still feels like something terrible is about to happen every waking hour. That constant bracing is exhausting, and when relief finally arrives through alcohol or another substance, the brain learns the shortcut fast. I’m Matt Brown, an addiction interventionist with 23 years of sobriety, and I’m walking you through what anxiety disorders really mean and why they’re one of the most missed drivers of addiction in the families I work with.

We break down three diagnoses that show up again and again: generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and social anxiety disorder. You’ll hear the core signs families often misread, like avoidance that looks like flakiness, reassurance seeking that turns loved ones into a coping tool, and irritability that gets mislabeled as “attitude” when it’s really a nervous system stuck on high alert. We also get specific about the self-medication cycle: why alcohol feels like an off-switch, how rebound anxiety makes the next day worse, what cannabis can do at higher THC levels, and why benzodiazepines require extra caution when there’s an addiction history.

Then we shift to what actually helps: evidence-based therapy like CBT, exposure work for panic and social anxiety, ACT for living a values-driven life alongside anxious thoughts, and practical medication options like SSRIs, SNRIs, beta blockers, and hydroxyzine. Most importantly, we talk about the family traps that keep people stuck and the mindset we aim for instead: warmth without rescue, consistent boundaries, and support for you too. If this helps you name what you’re seeing, subscribe, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more families can find the calm that doesn’t disappear when the substance does.
