Her first poem was published when she was only fourteen, and she continued writing throughout her life.After marrying Charles Hial Hawks and moving to Brooklyn, Annie became a member of Hanson Place Baptist Church. There she came under the influence of her pastor, Dr. Robert Lowry, the Baptist pastor, hymnwriter, and composer who encouraged her to begin writing hymns.In 1872, Annie wrote the words to “I Need Thee Every Hour.” The hymn came not from a time of tragedy, but during a season when she was especially conscious of the presence and love of Christ.
