Eugene ONeills powerful drama, Anna Christie, first graced the Broadway stage in 1921 and went on to capture the Pulitzer Prize in 1922. The play revolves around three compelling characters Chris Christopherson, a Swedish captain of a coal barge and seasoned seaman; his daughter Anna, who has spent her childhood away from him on a Minnesota farm; and Mat Burke, an Irish stoker employed on steamships. As Chris and Anna reunite after fifteen long years, Anna moves onto her fathers coal barge, concealing the shadows of her past. When fate brings her together with Mat during a foggy accident, they quickly fall in love. However, Anna soon learns that building a new life is fraught with challenges.
