This episode looks at the role of medication in animal behaviour and why it should never become a shortcut.
Medication can have an important place when an animal is genuinely struggling, but the first priority should always be understanding why the behaviour is happening.
That means looking beyond the animal itself. We need to look at their history, environment, health, experiences — and the humans around them. How we move, speak and interact can have a huge impact, particularly on anxious or traumatised animals.
The role of the behaviourist isn't simply to stop unwanted behaviour. It's to understand the animal and then teach the human to understand them.
Before we try to change what an animal is doing, we should first ask what they're trying to tell us.
