  • Dune: Part One — The Mantrap
    2026/10/18

Every future anyone has ever sold you was written by somebody. This show reads the futures that lasted: the hundred most-read science fiction novels. It asks what each one saw, what was missed, and about the people who wrote it and the people reading it now.

    We start with Dune.

About a hundred pages in, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen stops a spinning globe with one hand and tells his nephew that the planet under his palm is the biggest mantrap in all of history, and that the Duke is walking into its jaws. He is not being coy. Frank Herbert spoils his own novel out loud, in a villain's mouth, and then dares you to keep reading.

This episode is about why that works.

Along the way: why the gom jabbar is not a test of pain tolerance and never was; why every faction in this book can see the future and every single one of them is wrong about it; what happens to a civilization that outlaws thinking machines and then builds thinking people instead; what Herbert knew about eugenics in 1963 that makes the Bene Gesserit so uncomfortably well-written; and a matador's portrait hung on one wall of a dining room, facing the mounted head of the bull that killed him, with the blood still on the horns.

    WHERE WE STOP

Book One, from the opening on Caladan through Duke Leto's first full staff conference at the landing field. The last thing that happens is Paul alone in the conference room, remembering four words: "for the father, nothing."
