What does it really mean to trust God, and how do we know if we actually do? This message takes us deep into Luke 12, where Jesus uses a parable about a wealthy man and his ever-expanding barns to expose something most of us would rather not examine too closely: the condition of our hearts as revealed by how we handle money and possessions. The rich man in the story is not condemned simply for being wealthy. His downfall is something far more subtle and far more common. He collapses entirely inward, using the word 'I' or 'my' seven times in his brief internal monologue, never once considering God, his neighbors, or the vulnerable around him. His imagination never stretched beyond bigger barns. And in that moment, God calls him a fool, not because he lacked knowledge, but because he lived as though God was irrelevant to the equation. The passage draws a sharp and clarifying line: possessions can sustain life in limited ways, but they cannot give life. Only God can do that. And when we look to money for what only God can provide, whether out of greed that craves more or anxiety that fears having too little, we are making the same fundamental mistake from two different directions. Both greed and anxiety are really just misplaced trust. This message invites us to ask ourselves honestly: are we treating God like a work friend, someone we stay close to out of proximity and convenience, but who we have never truly trusted with anything valuable?
