Fong, MD is a Professor of Psychiatry at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior at UCLA, board certified in adult and addiction psychiatry, and he currently serves as President of the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry, an organization he has belonged to since 1997. He co-directs the UCLA Gambling Studies Program, a clinical research program examining the underlying causes and clinical characteristics of gambling disorder in order to develop effective, evidence-based treatment strategies, and since 2009 he has directed the UCLA Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship, a one-year accredited program providing clinical training in addiction psychiatry. He completed his undergraduate and medical training at Northwestern University, finished his adult psychiatry residency at UCLA in 2002, was the first accredited addiction psychiatry fellow at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute, and serves in the faculty leadership of the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative, where he also sits on the Steering Committee of the UCLA Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoids. He is a nationally sought voice on gambling policy, sports wagering, and behavioral addictionsHost: Dr. Mena Mirhom is a board-certified sports and performance psychiatrist who has worked with professional athletes in the NFL and NBA. He is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, where he has taught media training in the Public Psychiatry Fellowship for six years. He is a co-host of AACP's The Community Psychiatry Podcast and serves as Chief Wellbeing Officer at Athletes for Hope, where he leads national mental health initiatives for youth through sports. Jesse Ortiz is a fourth-year medical student who came into community psychiatry through street medicine work, both fields that are committed to providing effective and compassionate healthcare to people who are often overlooked by medical institutions. He believes that community psychiatry is an innovative and meaningful way to address the complicated history of psychiatry and its relationship to the carceral state and various forms of violence. Jesse feels that community psychiatry is a field that truly aims to put the patient first and address their needs as whole people in their unique socioeconomic context.
