Stu and Neil start their journey through the early history of the modern UFO phenomenon with the strange “Foo Fighter” reports of the Second World War, before moving into Kenneth Arnold’s famous 1947 sighting, the arrival of the term “flying saucer”, Roswell and the US Air Force investigations that became Project Sign, Project Grudge and Project Blue Book.

Along the way, they discuss how language and popular culture may have affected the way UFOs were reported, why the Roswell story changed dramatically over time, the recurring role of balloon explanations, and what we should — and shouldn’t — infer from Project Blue Book’s thousands of investigated cases.

August brought more government UAP material — and some of David Grusch’s most specific claims yet.

Stu and Neil examine Grusch’s claim that he has seen photographs and video relating to an alleged crash-retrieval programme, alongside his new estimate of more than 25 but fewer than 100 supposedly recovered vehicles.

But August also brought an almost perfect counterpoint: researchers examining all 112 publicly released PURSUE sensor videos found that none contains the complete information needed to calculate an object’s physical speed reliably.

Also discussed are new UAP NDA-reporting guidance, PURSUE Release Five, Robert Bigelow’s claimed Oval Office briefing, European UAP monitoring, the latest Gallup polling, competing interpretations of PR043 and new Air Force material entering the National Archives.

Two researchers have systematically analysed all 112 sensor videos released through the US government's PURSUE UAP programme — and their work raises a fundamental question about what those videos can actually establish.

In this solo Aliens Explored episode, Stu examines the new scientific preprint from Jacob Haqq-Misra and Ravi Kopparapu, including PR113, where the available information permits physical scenarios ranging from a small nearby object to something much larger travelling at extraordinary speed.

We also look at PR149, the importance of distance and camera geometry, and why the additional telemetry contained in the famous GOFAST footage makes such a difference to scientific analysis.

The original video version contains the sensor footage and diagrams discussed, but the central argument is equally important in audio: when we watch something moving rapidly across a screen, how much do we really know about how fast it was moving in the real world?

In 1969, Virgo Mitt was digging a well beneath his garden in Merivälja, Tallinn, when he reportedly encountered an extraordinarily hard metallic layer. The fragments he removed would become part of a mystery involving Soviet scientists, military interest and claims of something much larger beneath the property.

In this solo episode, Stu examines Object M and asks what the evidence really supports. A sample associated with the original discovery was analysed in 2017 and identified as likely human-made ferrochrome — but researchers could not be certain that it actually came from Mitt's original find.

So does that solve the mystery, or merely identify one particular piece of metal?

With renewed interest in Object M and the possibility of a modern ground-penetrating-radar survey, this remains a surprisingly testable UFO case.

The fifth tranche of PURSUE UAP records has arrived — but after 41 newly released items, are we actually any closer to understanding the phenomenon?

Stu Jackson and Neil Kelly examine Tranche 5 of the Presidential Unsealing and Reporting System for UAP Encounters, from its newly released videos and images to some much more intriguing historical government documents.

The footage itself leaves Neil distinctly underwhelmed: more distant lights, indistinct objects and sensor recordings that remain extremely difficult to interpret.

But buried among the documents are records showing that US military and intelligence agencies were taking the UFO problem seriously as far back as the 1940s.

We look at Project SIGN, technical analysis of UFO films from the early 1950s, recurring descriptions of unusual objects across generations, and a spectacular 1963 Brazilian crashed-object report which provides an excellent lesson in why the presence of a claim in a government file does not necessarily make that claim true.

Does Tranche 5 contain extraordinary evidence of extraterrestrial visitation?

No.

Does it strengthen the case that there is a genuine unresolved UAP phenomenon worthy of serious investigation?

That's where Stu and Neil don't entirely agree.

July 2026 brought new government records, a delayed AARO report, scientific initiatives and potentially important movement on UAP disclosure legislation.

In this episode, Stu examines the month’s major developments, including AARO’s latest annual report, the extraordinary account of approximately 100 airborne UAP off the Virginia coast, the UAP Science Advisory Council chaired by Avi Loeb, the reported nondisclosure-agreement waiver and the House adoption of a new UAP disclosure framework.

We also briefly revisit the fourth PURSUE records release and consider continuing allegations involving private aerospace contractors.

July did not produce publicly verifiable evidence of extraterrestrial craft or reverse-engineering programmes. However, it may have expanded the processes through which government records, testimony and physical evidence could eventually be examined.

What does “disclosure” actually mean—and would we recognise it if it happened?

In the first instalment of UFOs for Beginners, Stu Jackson and Neil Kelly unpack one of the most commonly used and frequently misunderstood words in ufology.

Does disclosure mean the release of classified documents? An official admission that some sightings remain unexplained? Evidence of technology beyond known human capabilities? Recovered materials, crashed craft, non-human bodies—or direct communication with another intelligence?
