Alice is the daughter of a country doctor in the village of Beetham. Intelligent, dependable, and deeply involved in caring for her large family, she has long been expected to marry John Rossiter, the vicar’s son and her childhood companion. When John returns from military service as Major Rossiter, however, his improved social position makes him attractive to wealthier and more fashionable families.
The ambitious Lady Wanless hopes to arrange a match between John and her daughter Georgiana, forcing John to consider the advantages of wealth and social status against the genuine affection he has always felt for Alice. Alice, meanwhile, must endure uncertainty and emotional pain without abandoning the generosity and self-control that define her character.
Rather than relying on dramatic action, Trollope builds the story through conversations, social expectations, misunderstandings, and subtle changes of feeling. His characteristic insight into Victorian society reveals how marriage could be influenced not only by love, but also by class, money, family pressure, and reputation.
At the heart of the novella is Alice herself. She is not presented as a glamorous heroine, but as a practical, intelligent, good-hearted woman whose resilience gradually becomes more important than outward beauty or social position.
Originally published in 1878, Alice Dugdale is an excellent audiobook for listeners who enjoy Victorian fiction, classic romance, English village life, social satire, and character-driven stories.
