Ten rural communities across Minnesota, Montana, North and South Dakota, and Native nations are turning old storefronts, grain elevators, and gas stations into creative gathering spaces. Sarina Otaibi (Activate Rural Program Director) and Courtney Bergey Swanson (Activate Rural Program Associate Director) at the Department of Public Transformation join the show to talk about the Activate Rural Learning Lab, a two-year cohort model pairing grant funding with hands-on technical assistance. We dig into what changed between the first cohort and the ten-project second cohort, why every dollar of Activate Rural funding has leveraged $4.30 from other sources, and what it actually takes to build a lasting third place in a town of a few hundred people.
