Jeff Ward and Randy Spear continue their Ephesians 6 series by focusing on verses 13–14: “taking up the full armor of God” and standing by fastening the belt of truth and putting on the breastplate of righteousness.

The belt of truth holds everything together. It exposes the enemy’s primary schemes: lies, accusation, shame, guilt and condemnation.

The breastplate of righteousness is not our performance. It is Christ’s own righteousness given to us (the great exchange of 2 Corinthians 5:21). Acting right is the fruit of already being righteous, not the way we become righteous. The enemy’s strategy here is accusation. Romans 8 declares there is now no condemnation and that God Himself will not bring a charge against His elect. Zechariah 3 pictures the high priest Joshua standing in filthy garments while Satan accuses him; God rebukes Satan, removes the filthy clothes, and clothes him in a white robe.

Colossians 2:14–15 shows the legal “certificate of indebtedness” that once gave Satan a charge against us was nailed to the cross and destroyed. The accusations that were once true are now legally false. “Show me where it’s written” Randy says often!

The result is sonship, bold access to the throne, and freedom.

This episode walks through Ephesians 6:10–13. After establishing the believer’s identity in Christ (chapters 1–3) and how that identity is lived out (chapters 4–6), Paul commands believers to be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His power, then to put on the full armor of God so they can stand against the devil’s schemes.

“Be strong” is a command. The struggle is not against flesh and blood. Evil often comes through people, yet the real enemies are rulers, authorities, cosmic powers, and spiritual forces of evil. These are personal beings organized by region and function; they were created by Christ and rebelled. They were disarmed at the cross, but they have not yet been locked up. Believers, seated with Christ, enforce that victory. A mature believer walks unoffendable, seeing people as dearly loved by God and under the enemy’s influence rather than as the enemy itself.

“Stand” appears multiple times and means to establish yourself in truth. Two illustrations make this concrete:

• The parable of the sower (Luke 8): the good soil clings to the word with steadfast endurance.
• The storm on the lake (Mark 4:35–40): Jesus said, “Let us go to the other side.” The disciples had the word but panicked when circumstances contradicted it. Jesus wanted them to stand on His word and exercise authority rather than pray in fear.

The “evil day” described in this passage is any time deception, doubt, or opposition shows up. God’s spoken word carries the power to accomplish what it says. Standing means expecting opposition, speaking and acting in line with God’s will, and walking by the Spirit rather than by sight.

In this episode of the Accidental Bible Scholar Podcast, Jeff and Randy continue their study of spiritual warfare in Ephesians by examining how we are made—spirit, soul, and body—and how that design shapes the battle. Drawing from Genesis 2:7, they present a simple overlapping-circle model: the spirit (unseen, eternal, the real you, one with Christ), the body/flesh (seen, temporary, five senses and appetites), and the soul (mind, will, and emotions) in the middle.

They explore why, after the Fall, we default to defining truth by what we see, hear, and feel—and why the new birth requires us to renew our minds so truth comes from the Spirit and God’s Word instead. Key practical points include:

- Your body works for you (not the other way around)—discipline its appetites and present it as a living sacrifice.

- Emotions lag behind the mind and will and can get “stuck” high; don’t let them lead.

- Not every thought that enters your mind is yours—take every thought to the obedience of Christ, reject the lies, and dwell on the things above.

Using everyday illustrations, Randy and Jeff show what it looks like to walk by the Spirit rather than by the flesh. This episode lays essential groundwork for the armor of God and the call to “stand” that begins in the next session.
