概要
The story follows Lord Colambre, the son of Lord and Lady Clonbrony, an Irish aristocratic family living expensively in London while drawing their income from estates in Ireland. Lady Clonbrony is deeply concerned with social status and fashionable society, while her husband’s finances are increasingly strained.
Colambre becomes uncomfortable with the artificial world surrounding his family and begins to question the way their Irish property is being managed in their absence. Determined to discover the truth for himself, he travels to Ireland without revealing his identity.
There, he sees the difference between responsible and irresponsible landlords. He encounters tenants whose lives have been harmed by neglect, exploitation, and dishonest estate management, but he also meets people whose generosity, loyalty, and integrity challenge many of the prejudices he has absorbed in England.
At the same time, the novel develops a romantic storyline involving Grace Nugent, a young woman closely connected to the Clonbrony family. Colambre’s affection for her is complicated by questions about her background, social position, and family history.
As Colambre learns more about Ireland, his understanding of responsibility changes. He realizes that landownership is not simply a source of income but creates obligations toward the people who depend on the estate.
Maria Edgeworth combines romance, family drama, social satire, and political commentary to criticize aristocrats who abandon their Irish estates while spending their wealth elsewhere.Copyright Mentor New York
