"The way to really live is to die."
Not the ending you're picturing. Not a hospital bed, not a funeral. He meant something almost the opposite of that — dying to the version of you that's been running on fear, on performance, on the desperate need to be seen a certain way.
He'd say most people are so busy protecting a life they've never actually lived, that when real life finally shows up at the door, they're too afraid to answer it.
Think about how we're usually taught to fix ourselves. Make a list. Build the habit. Find a role model and try to imitate them. White-knuckle your way through willpower until the new behavior sticks. De Mello watched this fail, again and again, in people far more disciplined than most of us. Why? Because when you force a behavior through sheer effort, the behavior changes, but the person underneath it doesn't. And the moment life gets hard enough, the old pattern comes roaring back, because nothing was actually seen — it was only suppressed.
Here's what he did instead, and it's the model I use constantly in my own work. Instead of telling someone to simply try harder to stop a pattern, get curious about it. Ask: when did this actually start? What is this really protecting me from? What was I so afraid of that this became the safest option? Not to excuse the pattern — to actually understand its origin. Because once you genuinely see where a pattern came from, something shifts on its own. You don't have to fight it into submission. It loosens, the way your grip loosens on something once you realize your hand was never actually in danger.
That's the difference between information and insight. Information is knowing a habit is bad for you. Insight is the "aha" moment where you actually feel, in your body, why you built it — and the moment that happens, the old pattern often starts dissolving on its own, without a fight.
