What can you as an artist do to protect your work?

  • Make sure your content is copyrighted. Officially register your work with your country’s copyright office. In the US it’s just copyright.gov
  • You can watermark your audio - use a reputable audio watermarking software like AudioWatermark, AquaMark, or Digimarc
  • Optimize your metadata - edit your file metadata to include your name and contact info, even usage restrictions, on top of the standard info included like genre, ISRC, etc. You can use tools like Mp3tag, MusicBrainz Picard, or TigoTago
  • Make sure you’re opted out of any potential AI licensing agreements your distributor or label may have signed up for. Check your settings on YouTube and Meta as well.
  • If you have found that your music was used to train ai without your consent, you can join the independent music creators lawsuit
