Heat, distance and a single upright military thermos create a moment of dread: water inside, a sealed cork, and a child’s size four sneaker wedged under a wash - why were these objects left together four hundred yards from the nearest dirt road in June 1997? What did the boot prints pointing away from every road actually mean?
In this episode, we follow the steps that Kenneth Long and his seven-year-old granddaughter Maya took after their pickup broke down, how a beagle named Copper halted at a thermos, and how those small choices shaped an eighteen-hour search that would need a retired surveyor and dawn light to resolve the mystery. Could careful decisions about direction and shelter explain the scene searchers first read as catastrophic?
Person: Kenneth Long
Person: Maya Renee Long
Date: June 9-10, 1997
Location: Seco Bench Road area, Sonoran Desert, Yavapai County
Animal: Copper (beagle mix)
- At 7:41 AM on June 10, 1997, Copper stopped beside a green Stanley thermos placed upright and sealed with water still inside.
- The thermos and sneaker were found about 400 yards from the nearest dirt road, in the shade of a creosote bush and creosote/caliche terrain.
- Deputy Art Solis bagged the thermos and the size four Velcro child's sneaker as evidence by 10:15 AM the same morning.
- Kenneth and Maya had walked roughly three miles by 3:45 PM when Maya sprained her left ankle, with approximately 3.5 miles still to go to reach Yucca Springs.
- Kenneth had a day pack containing a road flare, folding knife, first-aid kit, space blanket, a one-gallon jug three-quarters full of water, Maya’s 20-ounce bottle, and a green Stanley thermos full.
