A fallen propeller blade gives you nine minutes to choose
In this episode, we follow Atlantic Southeast Airlines Flight 529 from takeoff to the moment a propeller blade separates and the crew faces a shrinking window to act. The episode traces the mechanical failure, the prior refurbishing history, and the nine-minute choices that decided who lived and who did not - what would you have done in a burning cockpit with minutes to spare?
Person: Captain Edwin Gannaway
Person: First Officer Matthew Warmerdam
Date: August 21, 1995
Aircraft: Embraer EMB-120 RT Brasilia (N256AS)
Event: Outboard propeller blade separation leading to in-flight emergency
- At 12:43:25 the outboard section of the left-engine propeller separated with a sound passengers compared to a baseball bat hitting a trash can.
- The detached blade fell into tall grass near Burwell, Carroll County, Georgia, where it lay undiscovered for three weeks.
- Fourteen months earlier the same blade had failed an ultrasonic test, was sent to Hamilton Standard for refurbishing, and was returned to service.
- A similar design failure in 1991 (ASA Flight 2311) had already exposed the vulnerability but had not yet led to a mandatory inspection protocol.
- From blade separation to impact the crew and 29 people onboard had nine minutes and twenty seconds to respond while the engine tore itself apart.
