When Success Doesn’t Yet Compound
What if Africa’s biggest startup markets are outliers disguised as benchmarks? In episode 27, Neo takes the revised Ecosystem Momentum Framework into Sub-Saharan Africa, asking how much of the region’s innovation system is missed when venture capital is treated as the main way to observe company building. The conventional map centres on Nigeria, Kenya and South Africa, but companies across the region are also being built through customer revenue, corporate contracts, bank financing, development finance, private equity, grants and combinations of these.
Using nearly 600 company records alongside research into financing institutions, company formation, talent, markets and infrastructure, Neo examines what happens when the region is viewed through conversion rather than activity. The analysis finds genuine commercial and institutional strengths, from financial infrastructure and renewable energy to mobile money and cross-border payment systems, but also significant differences in whether those capabilities are accessible, repeatable and capable of supporting companies beyond their earliest stages.
Evidence of Selective Ecosystem argues that Sub-Saharan Africa is neither one underdeveloped innovation system nor a collection of isolated success stories. Meaningful momentum exists, but it remains concentrated by market, sector, stage and institution, while the evidence is still too uneven to support a complete regional Version 2 score. The harder question is therefore not whether successful companies can be built, but whether the systems that support them are becoming strong enough for the next company to use again.
