What does it take to move from a first-year engineering student to a contributor to the global open-source community?

In this inspiring episode of the GCET Podcast, first-year B.Tech. CSE student Siri Chandana speaks with Jayatheerth and Krishnageeth, two GCET students who turned curiosity, consistent learning and hands-on practice into a Google Summer of Code (GSoC) journey.

They share how they discovered open source, learned Git and GitHub, built projects, made their first contributions, found the right communities, and navigated the challenges of working with developers from around the world. They also discuss the importance of communication, teamwork, time management, problem-solving and perseverance beyond coding.

Jayatheerth also shares what it means to be sponsored by The Git Foundation for an all-expenses-paid trip to Portugal to attend a conference of Git developers.

The episode concludes with practical advice for beginners and a fun "GSoC Myth or Reality?" Rapid-Fire Round, challenging common assumptions about who can contribute to open source and pursue GSoC.

From learning to contributing, from GCET to the global tech community—this is a journey about starting small, staying consistent and thinking big.
