概要

Vote like your life depends on it. That's what I was thinking about during my preparation for this radio show. I was thinking about Freedom, the right to speak, to challenge, to have a say in what happens next. On the November 2 edition of A Love Supreme, the day before Election Day, those ideas run through the selections.

I found a new version of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” a piece covered by the Bad Plus with Ethan Iverson leading the way. Here we have the Black Flute Brigade giving us there version. I included “Mad World,” performed by Gretchen Parlato, Becca Stevens and Alan Hampton, and Kurt Elling’s interpretation of “American Tune.” Placed alongside Ellen Andrea Wang’s “This Is Not America” and “With God on Our Side,” performed by Meshell Ndegeocello, Bill Callahan and Chris Thile, these songs hopefully make us think about democracy and its fragility.

I added Lakecia Benjamin’s “New World,” John Hollenbeck and the Hot Club Jazz Orchestra’s “Peace and Justice,” and Nduduzo Makhathini’s “Hope Love Light” to speak to the possibilities we carry into the voting booth. Marc Ribot, Sam Amidon and Fay Victor offer “How to Walk in Freedom.” Pharoah Sanders puts it plainly: “You’ve Got to Have Freedom.”

Because an election is also about the people we live alongside, the places we call home, and the future we want for each other I added: Carole King’s “Home Again,” Charles Lloyd’s “The Water Is Wide,” and ARTEMIS playing “What the World Needs Now Is Love.”

Join me every Monday noon to 3 p.m. on WPKN for A Love Supreme.
