In mid-May 2026, a mother and daughter were found fatally stabbed inside their home in Tatsuno, Hyogo Prefecture. There were no obvious signs of theft, no murder weapon had been recovered, and the man police later identified as a suspect had reportedly spoken cryptic words to officers only days before the killings.

On May 19, 74-year-old Sumie Tanaka and her 52-year-old daughter, Chihiro Tanaka, were discovered inside their residence after an acquaintance became concerned about their welfare. Both women had suffered multiple stab wounds. The front door was reportedly unlocked, and investigators found no obvious evidence that the home had been targeted for theft.

Police later identified 42-year-old former neighbor Kenji Oyama as a suspect after examining security-camera footage and forensic evidence. Blood found at the scene was reportedly linked to his DNA.

The investigation took an unusual turn when Oyama had already come to police attention on May 16 after being found sleeping outdoors. He allegedly made a vague statement suggesting that he had killed someone, but officers did not detain him because the statement reportedly lacked enough concrete detail to establish a specific crime.

Oyama subsequently disappeared. A nationwide wanted notice followed, before his body was discovered on June 3 in a river roughly 13 kilometers from the crime scene. Investigators estimated that he had died around May 20, and no clear fatal trauma was identified.

With the primary suspect deceased, police planned to refer the case to prosecutors, leaving important questions surrounding motive and the precise sequence of events only partially resolved.

The case demonstrates a difficult reality of homicide investigations: identifying a likely perpetrator does not necessarily answer every question about motive, planning, or exactly what happened.
