When America entered World War II following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Doss wanted to serve.
But he did not want to kill another human being.
He was willing to risk his life for his country and for the men of his Army company. But he simply refused to take another life while doing so.
Many fellow soldiers did not understand. Some accused him of not being a “real man,” of being a coward.
Yet he also refused to hate the men who tormented him. Instead, he trained and trained hard. He mastered the skills of a medic.
Eventually, the men around him would discover that the soldier they considered a coward possessed truly remarkable courage and skill.
We can each learn from his unselfish prayer, offered not for himself, but for others: “Lord, please help me save just one more...”
