Right after Peter makes his profound and powerful statement of faith in Jesus, it seems he turns right around and puts his foot in his mouth. Jesus shares with His disciples what had to be a very intimate moment for the group when He told them what was going to happen to Him with His coming suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter said, “No way!” And Jesus essentially called Peter Satan. But hope remained – even for Peter! Jesus went on to talk about what the call to be His disciple really means and where hope can be found. What we read in Romans 13 is a beautiful echo of Jesus’ call to follow Him, as Paul closes his letter to the church in Rome with a strong charge to not lose hope.

Old Testament: Ezekiel 33:7-11
Epistle: Romans 13:8-14
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-28
