You’ve heard “practice makes perfect” your whole life, but what if practice really makes permanent? In this episode of Intentional Motherhood, Kelsey Redd follows up on her interview with Erin Gray and digs into an idea from that conversation: your nervous system will respond the way it has practiced, and that’s often the biggest obstacle to changing how you react.
Kelsey traces the phrase back to its origins, then shares a story from her days as a ski instructor at Sundance, where she discovered just how deeply ingrained her old habits were. From there, she connects the dots to the neurobiology of the nervous system, explaining why the old “highway” of reactions feels automatic while building a new “dirt road” feels uncomfortable and even wrong.
She also gets personal about what this looks like in motherhood. As a mom and a people pleaser, she’s spent years saying yes to everything and feeling like rest has to be earned. Lately she’s been practicing something new: saying no to an outing, staying home, and allowing herself to rest without finishing the to-do list first. It felt strange, and she shares why that discomfort is part of the process.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
- Where “practice makes perfect” came from and why “practice makes permanent” may be more accurate
- How early childhood experiences shape your nervous system’s automatic responses
- Why new, healthier responses feel unsafe before they feel natural
- How long exhales and deep breaths can help your body practice rest
- Why you can rest because you need it, not because you’ve earned it
If you’re a mom who struggles with people pleasing, mental load, or guilt around taking care of yourself, this episode is for you. Be sure to listen to the interview with Erin Gray first.
