Wednesday, October 7th: In Part 2, John explores the turning point of the gospel: “But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ.” Everything changes with that word—“but.” Against the backdrop of our sin and spiritual death, God’s love bursts through like light into darkness. John discusses how Paul ties God’s grace to His character—He doesn’t show mercy reluctantly but lavishly. Drawing on early church commentary and modern voices like C.K. Barrett and Marilynne Robinson, John shows that grace isn’t God changing His mind about us—it’s God being true to His loving nature. Grace is love in action. Even when we were dead, God loved us. That’s the heart of the gospel—grace doesn’t start with our repentance; it starts with God’s compassion.
