You can be a good person without living like you’re on call for everyone else. Today we’re naming the invisible script so many women follow, especially in midlife: the “good girl contract,” that quiet belief that if we’re helpful enough, agreeable enough, successful enough, and low maintenance enough, we’ll finally feel loved, safe, and accepted.
We break that contract down into five recognizable patterns: the Pleaser who can’t say no, the Fixer who jumps in before anyone asks, the Caretaker who meets everyone’s needs while ignoring her own, the Performer who feels worthy only when she’s producing, and the Peacekeeper who swallows truth to keep things calm. We also pull on the thread running through all of them: overfunctioning, where competence masks exhaustion and emotional labor becomes a lifestyle.
I share a personal story about caring for my parents during a tough season, how being needed felt rewarding until my body hit a wall, and what helped me see the difference between loving support and self-abandonment. You’ll leave with five practical tools you can use right away: noticing your patterns without shame, building in a pause, sorting what actually belongs to you, tolerating discomfort, and keeping small promises to yourself so self-trust grows back.
If you’ve been stuck in people pleasing, burnout, or blurred boundaries, hit play and listen closely. Then subscribe, share this with a friend who overdoes it too, and leave a review so more women can find their way out of the contract.
