Six years after giving my TEDx Talk, Reimagining the Way We Use Social Media, I’m revisiting what I believed about social media in 2020, what I got right, what I couldn’t have predicted, and what I believe about visibility, authenticity, trust, AI, and online community now. Back then, I argued that social media could be used to create three things: community, authentic human connection, and trust.I still believe that. But the internet we’re navigating today is very different from the one I was talking about six years ago. Social media has increasingly become interest media. Instead of primarily seeing content from the people we intentionally chose to follow, platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube increasingly decide what to show us based on what they believe will hold our attention. And now AI is changing the equation again. When anyone can generate more content faster, original thought, lived experience, discernment, and trust become even more valuable. In this episode of Unapologetically Visible, I’m exploring:Why I believe traditional “social media” has evolved into interest mediaHow algorithms changed the relationship between followers, reach, and discoveryWhy discovery has become easier while relationship-building has become harderWhat I got right about community, connection, and trust in my 2020 TEDx TalkThe difference between authentic visibility and performing authenticity for the algorithmWhy visibility does not have to mean giving your audience unlimited access to your lifeHow AI-generated content is making original ideas, lived experience, and human perspective more valuableWhy attention and trust are not the same thingThe strategic mistake businesses make when they optimize all of their content for strangersWhy your visibility strategy needs both discovery and relationshipThe question every founder and creator should be asking: If the algorithm disappeared tomorrow, would the people who matter still know how to find you?Chapters00:00 Introduction and Christina's background00:28 Christina's TEDx talk on social media in 202001:23 Social media as infrastructure during the pandemic02:16 The changing nature of social media and attention03:29 Christina's early internet experiences and community building05:12 Social media's role in cultural and community connection07:17 The reach and emotional impact of social media campaigns08:36 Social media's influence on politics and reality10:35 The death of the original social graph11:52 Interest-based media and its implications13:34 The difference between discovery and community15:17 Authenticity, performative content, and vulnerability18:10 The impact of AI on content creation and trust19:52 Building trust and meaningful relationships21:37 Reimagining visibility and community today22:01 Questions for intentional online presenceTEDx Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHpEcTkRvXA&t=375s💼 Work With ChristinaIf this episode hit home and you’re ready to step into the next level of your visibility and authority, explore 1:1 Coaching Options👉 https://www.thesocialbutterflygal.net/coaching💌 Connect with ChristinaFollow on Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/TheSocialButterflyGalFollow on LinkedIn | https://www.linkedin.com/in/christina-jovanna-olivarez-14081226/Follow on Threads | https://www.threads.com/TheSocialButterflyGalSubscribe to the Weekly Newsletter | https://exceptional-architect-8453.kit.com/378645e1ce?utm_source=ig&utm_medium=social&utm_content=link_in_bio&fbclid=PAdGRleAOeg6BleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBzcnRjBmFwcF9pZA8xMjQwMjQ1NzQyODc0MTQAAadxKUKygrtOk5mTgcTp_pI8hfcsESFjl7pnTlnhamq2ukyfYEPTSpqKlvweWw_aem_WGjpp-73guxgdW6-Xx4v1Q Hosted on Acast.
