America is losing farms at a rapid pace, but is Big Ag consolidation really to blame?

Stephen Banks, founder of the Farm Security Initiative and a former construction-industry entrepreneur, traveled 10,000 miles across 19 states to investigate the economic pressures reshaping rural America. He came away convinced that American agriculture needs structural change, including limits on how much of the meat-processing industry any one company can control.

Damian Mason challenges that conclusion. Is the decline in farm numbers evidence that the agricultural system is broken, or is farming experiencing the same consolidation that has transformed banking, airlines, telecommunications, and other industries?

Stephen and Damian debate meatpacking concentration, agricultural oligopolies, price-taking, risk transfer, competition, food supply chain redundancy, taxpayer support, and whether America has too many farms or too few. With roughly 1.8 million farms remaining and government payments projected to account for 29% of net farm income this year, the stakes extend well beyond the farm gate.

Is consolidation making American agriculture more efficient, or dangerously concentrated? And would breaking up Big Ag actually improve the economics of farming?

This episode offers a spirited examination of farm consolidation, agricultural policy, food security, and the economic forces determining who will produce America's food in the decades ahead.
