Ninety minutes? What am I supposed to do in there for ninety minutes?

We hear this all the time. So in this episode, JoJo and Kyle dig into the question we get more than almost any other: why do we book floats at ninety minutes, and do you actually need that long?

Here's the thing. There's no magic switch that flips at minute ninety. But a lot of the modern float research uses ninety-minute sessions, and what researchers have measured is pretty fascinating. In one study, many physiological changes showed up within roughly the first 15 minutes and kept going through the session. In another, floating was compared to watching a relaxing nature documentary (not sitting in traffic), and the float still came out ahead on anxiety, muscle tension and relaxation.

We also get into:

  • Why the first 20 minutes can feel busy (hello, snow globe)
  • Why you might lose track of where your body ends
  • What brain imaging shows when you close a few "browser tabs"
  • Why 60 minutes works too, and why we still call 90 the sweet spot
  • The cortisol claim you'll hear everywhere, and why the research is more mixed than people say

And honestly, the biggest reason ninety minutes feels so good might be the simplest one. Most of us never give anything ninety uninterrupted minutes anymore. Especially nothing.

If you've been curious about floating, or you've floated once and spent the whole time wondering when it would "work," this one's for you. Book your first 90-minute float at your nearest Altered States studio, and send this episode to the friend who can't sit still.
