In this episode, we talk about The Gap and the Gain and the importance of looking backward to recognize how far you’ve come instead of constantly looking ahead at everything you still haven’t achieved.

As men, it can be easy to define success by how much weight we can carry. More responsibility. More money. More hours. More goals. But success isn’t necessarily about carrying more and more weight—it’s about making the weight sustainable and remembering who you’re carrying it for.

We talk about the difficult season many of us are in right now: building careers while also building families. There are times when grinding is necessary. I discuss this idea from my book Emergency Standards: sometimes you need to work harder, take the extra shifts, and make enough money to provide for your family. But a season of grinding shouldn’t quietly become a life of grinding.

Your employer probably won’t remember all those extra shifts. Your family might.

We also discuss why happiness can’t always be something waiting for us at the next promotion, income level, or accomplishment. The finish line keeps moving. At some point, we have to recognize the gains we’ve already made and ask a bigger question: What kind of legacy are we building?

Were we there when our families needed us?

That doesn’t mean chasing some unrealistic version of perfect work-life balance. Some days work genuinely needs to be the priority. Other days your family does. The goal isn’t perfect balance—it’s making intentional decisions about what deserves your attention in the season you’re in.
