Jon from Day By Day Renewal joins us again for an honest conversation about masculine sexuality, intimacy, pornography, communication, and marriage.
We discuss some of the differences in how men and women often experience connection. Men may feel emotionally connected through sex, while women may be more likely to need emotional connection before they desire sex. That difference can create tension—especially when work, kids, responsibilities, and exhaustion leave very little time for a husband and wife to intentionally connect.
Jon talks about how pornography can creep into that gap and distort expectations around sex and intimacy. We discuss Hollywood’s portrayal of sex, the difference between sex with genuine intimacy and sex simply for the sake of sex, and Doug Weiss’s characteristics of healthy marital sex—including “lights on, eyes open, and nurturing conversation.”
We also get into the uncomfortable but important question of how men communicate their sexual needs to their wives. It is okay to ask your spouse for what you need, but an ask is not a mandate, and marriage does not create entitlement to sex. Healthy intimacy requires communication, consideration, and effort from both people.
Sometimes connection is as simple as texting your spouse during the day, taking time to debrief together, or prioritizing quality time when quantity is limited.
We also discuss masculinity and emotions. Men can develop the mindset that their feelings don't matter because the job still has to get done. But our wives often want to know what we're feeling—not necessarily to fix it, but because sharing those parts of ourselves creates intimacy.
Marriage isn't 50/50. It's 100/100.
