In 1951, one of the most famous men in Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, was a batsman. Some of the greatest players in the world believed he was a genius. Frank Worrell said that if he were choosing a dream team made up of the best cricketers on the planet, he would be the first person he picked. Garry Sobers called him the greatest batsman who had ever lived. And was not just admired for how well he played. He was a celebrity. He walked out to bat wearing a silk shirt and a cravat. He practised his shots in front of a mirror every morning. Women who had never watched a cricket match before came only because he was playing. And on the evening of 9 October 1951, the country’s greatest sporting hero was asleep at a friend’s house in Colombo 7, recovering from an afternoon of drinking. That’s when the police walked in and arrested him for the murder of his wife. This is the story of that man, that woman, and a case that took Ceylon by storm.
