By the mid-1990s, Vancouver’s Indo-Canadian underworld was no longer operating quietly. Young gangsters were threatening each other on television. Brothers were being shot in traffic and left dead in alleyways. Their names were becoming larger than the crimes attached to them, turning into a strange mixture of warning, legend and aspiration. But one of the most extraordinary stories from that world did not begin with a drug deal, a revenge killing or a man walking into a nightclub with a gun. It began inside a courtroom where six men stood trial for executing two brothers at the centre of Vancouver’s growing gang war. Outside it, bodies were continuing to fall. This is the story of a juror, a gangster and a murder trial that became almost as scandalous as the underworld it was supposed to judge.
