Why does marriage sometimes feel harder after quitting drinking - even though sobriety was supposed to make everything better?

Removing alcohol from a relationship doesn’t automatically remove the problems surrounding it. Sobriety can expose loneliness, resentment, damaged trust, unmet emotional needs, and unhealthy roles that both partners have learned to play. It can also introduce an entirely new version of the person who quit drinking - one who is learning to speak up, set boundaries, and show up more honestly.
