Joint pain, rash and fever are common pediatric complaints, and in many cases the underlying cause is benign or self-limiting. However, these symptoms can also be early indicators of an underlying rheumatologic or systemic condition. For nurse practitioners caring for children and adolescents, recognizing when a common presentation may represent something more serious is an important part of timely evaluation and referral.
