#19 Spiral Dynamics, Blue Stage Chapter 4.4 - Skeletons, Ethnocentrism, Morality and Marriage CHAPTER 4-4
For much of human history, justice was personal: you hurt me, I hurt you. An eye for an eye. But as civilizations grew, something revolutionary happened—society increasingly took revenge out of the hands of individuals and put justice into institutions.
In this episode of Deep Play, we explore how humans increasingly traded the unpredictable rule of powerful individuals for laws, courts, organized religion, disciplined armies, duty, and institutions built to outlast any one person.
These blue structures have become the backbone of modern societies around the globe.
Blue attempted to tame one of humanity’s most disruptive forces: impulse. The question “What do I want?” increasingly collided with “What am I supposed to do?” Work. Obey. Sacrifice. Serve your kingdom. Serve God. Often, those last two were deeply intertwined.
Even love and sex became more institutionalized. Marriage developed into a powerful legal, economic, and religious structure governing property, inheritance, children, sexuality, and family life. The Bible itself captures some of this evolution—from patriarchs and kings with multiple wives to an increasing emphasis on exclusive marital fidelity and, eventually, in the New Testament, monogamy as the dominant Christian ideal.
Justice became regulated. Religion became institutionalized. Armies became disciplined. Marriage became codified.
And individual desire increasingly encountered a powerful new sentence:
“There are rules about that.”
Blue brought extraordinary stability to human civilization—but it also created the rigid, absolutist, authoritarian, toxic systems that prevent growth into later, more expansive, healthier stages.
