Episode 18: EMDR for First Responders: How Trauma Therapy Actually Works

Eye movements. Tapping. Little buzzers.

Sounds a little like voodoo, doesn't it?

If you're a first responder who's heard about EMDR therapy and wondered how moving your eyes back and forth is supposed to help you process years of traumatic calls, you're not alone.

I was skeptical of EMDR even after I was trained in it.

In this episode, I'm sharing two personal experiences that completely changed my perspective: my son's rollover accident when he was just three years old, and my own experience receiving EMDR during one of the most difficult periods of my professional life.

We're also getting a little nerdy about the science behind EMDR, what actually happens during treatment, and why it can be particularly helpful for first responders who don't necessarily want to spend months talking through every detail of the calls they've experienced.

In this episode, we're talking about:

  • What EMDR is and how trauma processing actually works.

  • Why eye movements, tapping, and buzzers are only part of the treatment.

  • What your therapist is doing during those quiet moments of processing.

  • Why you don't have to describe every graphic detail of a traumatic experience.

  • What EMDR can feel like and what changes people may notice afterward.

  • Why finding a therapist who understands first responder culture matters.

Whether you're in law enforcement, fire, EMS, dispatch, corrections, healthcare, or the military, this episode is for you if you've been curious about EMDR but aren't quite convinced about the whole eye-movement thing.

Because the goal isn't to forget what happened. It's to help you move forward without those experiences continuing to have the same hold on you.

Coming next week: John Tank joins me to break down EMDR Intensives—what happens during six hours of treatment, who they're appropriate for, and why someone might choose an Intensive instead of weekly therapy.

Stay safe. Stay connected.
