Philippians: Living the Jesus Story
Episode 2: Greetings (Philippians 1v1-11)
Gratitude and joy are often elusive. Yet, an attitude of gratitude was Paul’s secret to finding joy even while in a Roman prison. In Africa, there is a remarkable fruit known as the “taste berry.” It gets its name from what happens when you eat it: for several minutes afterward, everything you taste, even foods that are naturally sour or acidic, tastes sweet. The secret is a molecule in the fruit called miraculin, which binds to the taste buds on your tongue and temporarily changes the way they respond to acidity, causing sour foods to taste sweet. A spirit of gratitude is the “taste berry” of following Jesus. It changes the way we experience what is already in front of us. What might otherwise taste bitter, sour, or difficult can begin to take on a sweetness we could not see before.
