Today’s topic is — I Gave Up. But I Didn’t Give In.

Now, I’m sure you know the phrase give up. It means you stop. You quit. You walk away from something.

For example:

• I gave up sugar.

• He gave up trying.

Give up is about actions. And sometimes, giving up is actually the right choice.

But how about give in?

Give in is different. It means you surrender or you lose — you let something defeat you on the inside.

For example:

• Don’t give in to pressure.

• Don’t give in to fear.

Give in is about your inner world. It’s what happens when pressure,

fear, or doubt wins and you lose.

They sound similar. But they are very different.

And today, I want to tell you a story about the difference — from my own life. I’m going to share something I don’t talk about often It’s about a time when teaching English in the USA was truly, truly hard. And what kept me going.

As usual, I’ll start with the intermediate version and move on to the advanced. Are you ready? Here we go!
