Do you end your day thinking, "I didn't do enough today," instead of recognizing everything you did well?
As women, especially Latinas and women of color, we're often quick to celebrate everyone else's accomplishments while minimizing our own. We downplay our wins, move the finish line every time we reach a goal, and convince ourselves that what we're doing "isn't enough."
In this episode, I share the research behind why so many women struggle to give themselves credit, how our brains are wired to focus on what's missing, and why acknowledging your progress isn't arrogance. It's one of the most powerful ways to build confidence, strengthen self-trust, and become a more effective leader.
I talked about:
- Why women often undervalue themselves, even when they're performing just as well as men
- How self-evaluation impacts confidence, career growth, and leadership
- Why your brain naturally focuses on what's missing instead of what's working
- The importance of collecting evidence of your progress instead of constantly moving the finish line
- How celebrating small wins helps build self-confidence and resilience
- The difference between giving yourself credit and toxic positivity
- Why self-recognition is a leadership skill, not an ego exercise
- A simple daily practice to help you build confidence and trust yourself more
Key Lessons
1. Give yourself credit for what you're getting right.
There are more things you're doing correctly every single day than your brain is giving you credit for. Learning to acknowledge them isn't just self-care. It's part of becoming a really powerful leader.
2. Confidence is built by recognizing the evidence of who you're becoming.
You cannot continue to erase your own progress and then wonder why you don't feel confident. Confidence isn't built only by accomplishing bigger things. It's built by recognizing the evidence of who you are becoming day in and day out.
3. The brain needs evidence.
Your brain needs proof that things are moving in the right direction. The more you notice what you're getting right and document your wins, the more evidence you collect that supports new beliefs about yourself.
4. Stop moving the finish line.
If you only allow yourself to feel proud when everything is finished, you'll never really feel proud of yourself. Celebrate yourself while you're climbing the mountain, not just when you reach the top.
5. Give yourself credit every single day.
Ask yourself: What did I get right today? What did this require from me? What does this show me about who I am becoming? These questions help you connect your daily actions to your identity and remind you that you're getting more right than you think
At the end of your day, ask yourself these three questions:
- What did I get right today?
- What did that require from me?
- What does this show me about who I am becoming?
Over time, this simple practice helps you collect evidence of your growth, strengthen your self-belief, and shift the way you see yourself.
