Office politics has a bad reputation, but avoiding it entirely is practically impossible. Trying to avoid it can also be a career limiting move. This episode defines what office politics means and what happens when it goes unmanaged: more anxiety, lower job satisfaction, and a higher chance of wanting to quit.Next, I get into some tactical advice for navigating a political environment:• Setting firm boundaries• Handling workplace conflict• Speaking your mind assertively without triggering the likability penaltyFrom there, I'll talk about how men and women tend to navigate office politics differently, and how office politics tends to be presented differently to men versus women in the first place. I also cover why getting comfortable with office politics early in a career pays off long-term, how to start building that skill before you have years of tenure or reputation to lean on, and how office politics shift once a woman is the one leading the charge, including a classic study on the specific stages women executives moved through on their way up.Sources Cited in This EpisodeKacmar, K.M., & Carlson, D.S.
