What happens when the life you thought would destroy you becomes the very experience that leads you towards your purpose? In this episode of Unplugged & Unstoppable, I sit down with Maz from Real Talk with Maz for an extraordinary conversation about addiction, recovery, spiritual awakening, nervous-system healing, boundaries, leaving an old life behind — and ultimately turning lived experience into something that can help other people. Maz speaks openly about a life that once involved homelessness, heroin addiction, methadone, alcohol dependency, grief and repeated attempts at rehab. At her lowest point, she had accepted that addiction would probably kill her. But that wasn't the end of her story. We explore Maz's belief that addiction wasn't the real problem — it was the solution she had found to numb what she didn't know how to face. Her eventual recovery led her beyond simply getting clean and into a much deeper process of understanding herself, confronting her past and beginning her spiritual journey. Maz talks about Reiki, shamanic practice, awakening, dark nights of the soul and the realisation that years spent going down rabbit holes and trying to wake everybody else up were keeping her trapped in another form of fight-or-flight. One of the biggest transformations came when she followed her instincts, left Aberdeen after 16 years and moved to the Isle of Mull. For the first time in her life, she says she discovered what genuine peace felt like. We also talk about the importance of boundaries, why not everyone is meant to accompany us into the next chapter of our lives, and why protecting your peace sometimes means becoming comfortable with disappointing other people. Then comes another fascinating twist. After losing almost £5,000 through a publishing experience, Maz decided to learn the industry herself. She went from barely knowing how to use a laptop to creating around 20 books and guides — and is now working towards building a publishing business designed to help other people bring their own stories into the world. This is a conversation about what can happen when you stop running from yourself and start asking: What is all of this trying to teach me? In this episode we explore: Growing up around addiction and entering addiction herself Homelessness, heroin, alcohol and methadone Why Maz describes addiction as a solution, rather than the underlying problem Reaching the point where she believed she would die Rehab, recovery and finding a path that worked for her Reiki, spirituality and her awakening Moving beyond endless conspiracy rabbit holes Fight-or-flight and finally recognising survival mode Why boundaries became non-negotiable Leaving Aberdeen and starting again on the Isle of Mull Discovering peace for the first time Losing almost £5,000 through publishing — and what it taught her Becoming an author and learning the publishing world Why Maz believes everybody has a book inside them Her plans to help other authors publish their stories The dream of eventually creating an animal sanctuary What she would tell someone who currently believes there is no way out Chapters 00:00 – Welcome to Unplugged & Unstoppable 01:29 – Maz's early life and introduction to addiction 03:09 – "I was running from myself" 04:01 – Homelessness, heroin and methadone 04:51 – Grief, loss and alcohol 07:49 – The first steps towards recovery 08:56 – Rehab and recovery meetings 09:34 – Why the traditional 12-step route didn't work for Maz 10:52 – Reiki and beginning to heal 11:56 – Discovering her nervous system was still in survival mode 13:18 – "I'd never felt peace in my life" 14:47 – Spirituality and awakening 16:16 – Awakening before 2020 16:52 – Why Maz stopped going down rabbit holes 18:13 – Boundaries, energy and protecting your peace 19:43 – The story behind Fuck 'Em 21:50 – Leaving everything behind for the Isle of Mull 25:32 – Realising she was still living in fight-or-flight 27:42 – Changing yourself instead of trying to change the world 28:57 – The £5,000 publishing lesson 30:11 – Turning that experience into a publishing vision 31:03 – Why everybody has a book inside them 32:01 – How to avoid publishing mistakes 32:37 – From not knowing how to use a laptop to becoming an author 33:41 – Spirit animals, astral travel and remote viewing 34:21 – Maz's near-death/out-of-body experience 35:18 – Maz's favourite book and the art of detachment 36:45 – The hardest lesson she's learned 37:46 – What her younger self would think of her now 38:19 – What success means today 38:47 – Why peace has become the ultimate goal 39:23 – Publishing, animals and Maz's five-year vision 40:13 – What Maz would say to someone who has lost hope 42:21 – Where to find Real Talk with Maz A message from this episode Maz's story is a powerful reminder that the darkest chapter of your life doesn't necessarily get the final word.
