I cried over a cupcake GIF this morning.

You see, my youngest turned eighteen today.

I was in bed, drinking my coffee, phone in hand, scrolling through Happy Birthday GIFs. I picked a cupcake with one flickering candle and rainbow sprinkles cascading onto the table. The words simply said, "Happy birthday to you." It felt so inadequate. But she's away at college, in class, and I wanted her to hear from me early in the day. So I sent it.

So why the tears? Some of it was grief. But the real cause, I think, was relief. For twenty years I've pushed down one thought: what if something happens to my husband and me before our kids are grown? This morning, I got to set it down.

If you carry what-if thoughts as a physician mom, this episode is about saying yours out loud.
