Autumn is my favorite season for a slightly embarrassing reason: as the light gets lower, everything casts a longer shadow, and I find that weirdly reassuring. The shadows were there all summer. You just couldn’t see them at high noon. That’s the whole premise of this episode, which goes somewhere more specific and more uncomfortable than the survey I gave you back in episode 91: what the five kleshas, yoga’s five obstacles, look like when they follow you into the teacher’s seat.Because they do follow you in. Avidya, wrong-seeing, is counting 11 students in a room that used to hold 20 and deciding, in one exhale, that you’re a bad teacher. Asmita, ego, is the toddler who can only say “me,” checking who showed up before deciding how much to give. Raga and dvesha, craving and aversion, are the full room you chase and the 6:00 a.m. Monday class you dread. And abhinivesha, the fear of the unknown, shows up as clinging and over-planning, the compulsion to script every transition because the unknown feels unsafe. Then I turn to the shadow itself. Most of us somehow picked up a job description along the way that nobody ever wrote: permanently calm, endlessly generous, beyond craving and aversion. So we perform serenity, and the performance wears a groove into a rut. What gets shoved out of view doesn’t disappear. It leaks, as the snarky aside about another studio, the relentless positivity, the burnout that seems to arrive from nowhere. Your believability as a teacher doesn’t come from having transcended anything. It comes from being a whole person who practices anyway. You’ll leave with five small practices, one per klesha, most adapted from the actions Alexandra DeSiato and I offer in Yoga Off the Mat: Byron Katie’s two questions for avidya, a loving self-callout for asmita, a three-breath pause for craving and aversion, a memento mori for the fear of the unknown, and a 10-minute weekly journal for the compulsions underneath it all. Plus two boundaries that make the work safer, and an invitation to let one performance fall this season, the way the trees are demonstrating. If Yoga Off the Mat has been useful to you, Alexandra and I would be so grateful for a five-star rating and review on your favorite bookseller site.
