“Take…the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:17b)

What does it actually mean to wield the Word of God as a weapon? How well do we need to know the Bible to use it in the middle of a spiritual battle? And what happens when the battle comes before we feel ready?

The Holy Spirit is our Teacher, training us throughout our lives to know God's Word, recognize lies, answer them with truth, and obey what God has said. But dependence on the Spirit doesn't mean passivity. God commands us to take the sword—to refuse to negotiate with sin and lies, to intentionally train in His Word, and not merely to defend ourselves, but to advance His truth and gospel in the world.
