  • Film Camera Operator Anne Carson: Redefining Focus When Your Body Says Cut
    2025/11/03

"A daily practice, again, I want to leave this with you and I'm leaving it with myself. Is to just try as hard as you can to look at these challenges as opportunities. What can I learn here? Can this fill me with love? Can this teach me something I need to learn? Is this busting open a block that I've been carrying around my entire my life-- the inability to ask for help; the inability to accept love. Whatever it may be. It will serve a purpose if you let it."

Today’s episode is a sit down with Matt's friend & City on a Hill co-worker, Anne Carson. Anne has had a long & successful career working on hit TV shows and films including War of the Worlds, Free Solo, It Ends With Us, & The Morning Show to name a small, select few. This vulnerable, heartfelt conversation details not only Anne's love for filmmaking, but also her passion for running. Anne dives into how spinal injuries not only affected her career and love for running, but lead her to an inflection point; a point where she's not sure how to move forward. Matt and Anne talk about their time on set while filming City on a Hill (watch out for those staplers!) and how it's never to late to pivot in a new direction. Anne is a true alchemist and explains how to redefine focus, when your body says, "Cut!"

  • Your Life Is A Movie
    2025/10/20

"It's not what you are doing, it's how you are approaching it. So if you approach that job like an actor or writer, it's what I told Erin Galvin years ago when she was coming to my classes in LA and she was doing a temp job. And she would come in and start telling me about the thing and she was making us laugh. And I'm like that's the show, or movie, you should be writing!"

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss how even when you are doing your side gig or side hustle, there's opportunity to be creative. Your personal life experiences outside of acting will feed you so much material if you choose to look for it. So even when you're at your job and wishing you were on set, remember that it is still serving you. Compile those funny stories, the crazy thing that happened during your shift, or how you boss treated you and use it to tell your next story. It can be funny, relatable, and most importantly uniquely yours to tell.

  • Give Them A Show
    2025/10/13

"The other thing he said that I thought was interesting, because I don't do this, and I have prided myself on not doing this. They said he see's salesmanship as showmanship. And Steve Jobs was the same way. Whenever they put on a presentation, it is a show. You get publicity and it's a big splash. And I've always been like I don't want to do that I'll let my work speak for itself and they will eventually find me. And it's like, maybe, but you might be dead by then."

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss how it's important to market and brand ourselves in order to get our work seen. You can be the best actor in the world, but if you don't know how to properly market yourself no one will ever know. The commercialization of an actor's talent is a vital part of the process if your goal is to make money/a living as a working actor. We can often feel like it's our ego wanting attention if we are to self market ourselves, and it's important to keep that at bay, but it's also important to self advocate for yourself. It's OK, and necessary in this career, to let people know how great you are and what you have to offer.

  • How To Have More Fun
    2025/10/06

"And then I kind of thought, huh, that's just the initial overwhelm when someone comes at you with a new bag of tools. There could be stuff that I bring up in these calls where you go, 'Oh Gosh, I don't know if I can add that to my life. When you first hear it that's the reaction, then when you settle with it and you go, 'OK, actually could this make things more fun?'"

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss how it's always good to be re-evaluating our process and the systems we have in place. When new ideas are brought up to us we can initially want to push them away. It's human nature to resist change at times. Once we get past the initial overwhelm, we can explore how to make our systems and processes work better for us. This can lead to more happiness and better results. We can find more joy in our life when we release resistance and allow what's meant for us to flow in.

  • When To Share Your Ideas
    2025/09/29

"I try and do my work behind closed doors. I think I used to show my work, but now I try and do my work behind closed doors. And then be like, 'Yeahhh! I'm just free and easy.' You know what I mean? And let them think you got lucky. Whereas I used to want to be like, 'Nooo, I worked so hard!" Now I'm like, let 'em think I just f***ing lucked out."

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss how it's important to protect your ideas before sharing them too quickly with people. Other people aren't always going to see what you see. If you share your idea too quickly a lot of people are going to shoot it down. Not because they don't want you to succeed, but they often believe they are protecting you. It's well intentioned, but not the best for allowing your ideas, stories, etc to blossom. Protect your creativity before it's ready to share with the world.

  • Be Your Own Cheerleader
    2025/09/22

"I may as well be my best cheerleader, because the world's not gonna. It's not like the world is out to get you, it's just, as we say, there's so many people putting their hat in the ring for all these jobs, that it's just the way it is. It's just the way it is. Like you might not get seen. But if you translate that to something about you being wrong, that energy just chips away at you. The next one is not going to be as good."

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members. Today, we discuss staying in the right mindset. Understanding that rejection is part of the game. If we can reframe each rejection and understand that it means we are one step closer to our "yes" than we have a much better shot at not giving up and achieving our goals. We have to be our own cheerleader and infuse positivity in order to buoy us when things may be harder than we might want in the moment.

"But if you have stuff that's the self starting stuff on the side, when you are in those periods of no work from the outside, you're not bummed about it. So your energy doesn't go down. Because I had Mickey Brasch, I wasn't bummed about being done with those other jobs."

Today’s episode was ripped directly from one of our 10,000 NOs Working Actors Community weekly zooms where Matt addresses the challenges that face our members.
