Dear readers, Through this book, I wish to share with you the Words of 1 Kings chapters 13 through 17. These Words record the process that began with God’s judgment on the false altar that Jeroboam had set up, and continued as the kings of northern Israel repeated the sin of Jeroboam, reaching at last the Baal worship of Ahab and Jezebel. In that dark age, God raised up Elijah, and even in the midst of drought and famine He supplied the Word of life and food. In all these events is contained an important truth: that we must not change the Word of God according to human thoughts, and that we must firmly keep the gospel of the water and the Spirit in our hearts and preach it.

1 Kings chapter 13 records the event in which the man of God who came from Judah proclaimed judgment against the altar of Bethel, and the altar was split apart as the sign of that prophecy. He refused Jeroboam’s invitation according to the command of God, but on his way back he was deceived by the lie of the old prophet, disobeyed the command, and was killed by a lion. Even after seeing these events, Jeroboam did not abandon his evil way, and in the end this became the cause by which his house would be destroyed.

1 Kings chapter 13 is the chapter in which the word of God’s judgment is proclaimed against the altar of Bethel that Jeroboam made. To protect his own kingship, Jeroboam set up golden calves and changed the law of sacrifice that God had ordained. Outwardly there was the form of serving God, but in reality he had changed the order of the remission of sin that God had ordained, according to his own thoughts and desires.

One of them was that he exchanged God for golden calves; another was that he ignored God’s command and changed the date of the Day of Atonement; and besides these, he destroyed the office of the Levitical priests whom God had specially established, so that anyone, even a common person, could become a priest if he volunteered. So today’s passage tells us how the wrath of God comes down on those who remain in that line of faith and on their families. We must also consider with what resolve we ourselves ought to carry on our life of faith.

In 1 Kings chapter 12, Jeroboam made golden calves to protect his own kingship and placed them in Bethel and Dan. And he told the people that there was no need to go up to Jerusalem. He regarded the temple and the sacrificial system God had ordained as obstacles to keeping his own kingdom.

1 Kings chapter 14 records how, on the occasion of the sickness of Jeroboam’s son Abijah, the judgment to come upon Jeroboam’s house and upon northern Israel was proclaimed, and how Judah in the days of Rehoboam fell into idolatry and suffered the invasion of Egypt. Northern Israel and Judah were ruled by different kings, but both nations came to face judgment because they departed from the Word of God.

1 Kings chapter 14 is the chapter in which Jeroboam’s sin begins to be revealed as judgment on his house and on all Israel. When Jeroboam’s son Abijah became sick, Jeroboam did not come before God in repentance. He disguised his wife and sent her to the prophet Ahijah, wanting only to know what would become of the child. But God already knew of that disguise, and He spoke the judgment that would come upon the house of Jeroboam.
