• Preface
    2026/08/01

Dear readers, Through this book I wish to share with you the Word of 1 Kings, chapters 1 through 7. These words record the history that runs from David’s old age and Solomon’s accession, through the ordering of the kingdom and its wisdom, to the building of the Temple and the completion of its furnishings. Outwardly it looks like a story of kingship and national prosperity, of building and administration; but within it, how imperfect man’s righteousness is, and the way of salvation God has established for sinners, are plainly revealed.

In the Hebrew Bible, First Kings originally formed one book together with Second Kings, and its Hebrew name was Melakim (מְלָכִים), meaning “Kings.” Later, when the Greek Septuagint (LXX) divided it into two books, the names we know today—First Kings and Second Kings—took their place, and the title carries the meaning of a historical book that records in chronological order the reigns of the kings of Israel and Judah.

1 Kings chapter 1 records the process in which, when David had grown old and could no longer properly exercise his kingship, Adonijah tried to become king on his own, but Solomon was anointed and established as the king of Israel according to David’s command.

1 Kings chapter 1 begins with King David’s old age and frailty. David was a king greatly used by God, but he, too, was in the end a man who grew old and weak. Through this scene the Scripture shows that man’s glory and power are not everlasting, and that no matter how great a man may be, he cannot be our eternal support.

1 Kings chapter 1 begins with King David’s old age. David was the king of Israel, a man whom God had established, and a man who had fought many wars for the kingdom of God. Yet the Scripture says that even that David “was old, advanced in years; and they put covers on him, but he could not get warm.”

1 Kings chapter 2 records the process in which, after David left his last charge to Solomon and died, Solomon dealt with the figures who threatened his kingship and established the kingdom firmly. Facing death, David charged Solomon to be strong, to prove himself a man, and to become a responsible king. But the most important qualification of a king that David spoke of was not military strength or political ability.

  • Ch02_02_Biblical Exposition_Humble Your Heart Not before the Power of Man but before the Word God Has Established
    2026/08/01

1 Kings chapter 2 shows, through David’s last charge and the establishment of Solomon’s kingship, that the kingdom of God is built not on human bloodline or power but on the Word of God and the order of His righteousness. Facing death, David does not first speak to Solomon of royal power; he commands him to keep the commands, statutes, and judgments of the LORD. This means that before becoming king, one must first stand rightly before God.
